Youtube

Youtube is a unique social media platform that opens more opportunities than I think people realize. We can use Youtube to advance our education, inform ourselves about issues in the world, and simply, entertainment. However, Youtube has more power than you think. Let me explain.

It is clear that men hold most of the jobs on and off the screen in Hollywood. Women make up more than half of the population within America (58.2%). However, studies have shown that only a quarter of the creators, directors, and writers in Hollywood are women. The lack of women behind the screen is what leads us to the misrepresentation of women we observe on the screen. Men do not understand women the way women do. Because of this,  they cannot accurately create a female character that women can fully connect to. They are usually sexualized or based on societies stereotypes.

Hollywood clearly hires more men than women to do their writing. So, how do women writers and producers get their work out there? Youtube! More and more people are creating web series. Youtube allows you to post whatever you want whenever you want, and women are using that to create their own series. They do not have to have their script approved, as they would in Hollywood. This creates opportunities for women to portray themselves truthfully and creates content for women to enjoy and connect with. And it works! The television show Broad City was originally a web series created by Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson. However, women felt connected to Broad City's down to earth, real female issues that the series grew so popular Hollywood gave them a television series. Hm, having real content that is not based on stereotypes is beneficial, imagine that!

To tie things up, minority groups, including women, should posting their content on Youtube. It gives the freedom to create true, unedited content and may even land you spot in Hollywood,
